What Happens When You Block an Artist on Spotify?
Blocking an artist on Spotify has two key repercussions. First, Spotify won’t recommend the artist’s songs across the platform and on all devices. Second, if you search and play any song by the artist, it won’t play—until you unblock the artist. However, one key exception applies. If a blocked artist is featured in a song or album from another artist, the song will still play.
Besides, blocking an artist will not stop you from seeing their songs elsewhere. You will still see the artist name, songs, and albums in your search results, allowing you to unblock them if you wish.
How to Block Specific Artists on Spotify
You may wish to block an artist on Spotify for various reasons. No matter your reason, the platform has your back.
Unfortunately, like hiding songs on Spotify, you can only block an artist on mobile (Android and iOS). As of writing, you can’t block artists while using Spotify on the web or via the dedicated desktop app.
Here’s how to block an artist on Spotify:
Find an artist you wish to block. To do this, you can search for an artist using the Search tab. You can also find them through a playlist. Alternatively, if the artist’s song is playing, tap the player at the bottom and tap on the name to go to the artist’s profile. Tap the three-dot menu below the artist’s name to open an options menu. Tap Don’t play this or Don’t play this artist.
Once you’ve done that, Spotify will show you a pop-up to confirm that the changes have been saved. If the artist’s song were currently playing before blocking, it would stop immediately after. Spotify will play the next song in line if you are listening to a playlist. If you navigate to a blocked artist’s page, Spotify will display a block icon instead of the regular Follow button.
How to Unblock an Artist on Spotify
If you want to play songs from a blocked artist, you must unblock them first. Starting May 2021, Spotify removed the dedicated folder that allowed you to see all your blocked or hidden artists and songs. As such, finding your list of blocked artists or songs on Spotify is no longer possible. Therefore, you must know the specific artist’s name to unblock them.
Here’s how to unblock an artist on Spotify:
Search for an artist’s name in the Search tab and select it from the search results to open their profile. Finally, tap the Block icon under the name to unblock the artist.
You can also unblock the artist by tapping the three-dot menu below the artist’s name to open the options menu and then tap Allow to play this artist.
