Most scanners have a codes menu, where you’ll click on each system selection and receive its problem codes (which correspond with your car’s problem areas). Most scanners have system selections for Powertrain (referring to the engine, transmission, ignition), Body (airbags and power steering), Chassis (brakes and axles), and Undefined (any issue not covered in the other systems). [1] X Research source If you don’t want to buy an OBD2 scanner, you can try each solution in the section below until one fix bypasses your car’s reduced engine power. If you’re unfamiliar with cars and feel uncomfortable managing the issue on your own, take your car in to your local mechanic.

Frayed and damaged cables will have their colorful casing stripped, exposing the bare metallic wiring. Your mechanic can replace any damaged wires. If you are comfortable working on your car and know how to solder, you can fix damaged wires yourself. Remove the damaged piece of wire and solder the existing wire together with a new, matching strip. Always make sure your car is off and the wires you’re working on are disconnected from your car. [3] X Research source The engine wiring harness is a collection of cables and wires that control your car’s electrical system.

If you are still receiving a reduced engine power message, you might have to fully replace your mass air flow sensor to resolve the issue.

Most cars have 2 oxygen sensors: one under the hood of your car, and one completely under the car. The sensor under the hood is typically near the motor by the engine, while the one under your car is by the catalytic converter and exhaust system. If you still have reduced power, this might mean that you have to fully replace your sensors to bypass the message.

If the reduced engine power message doesn’t go away after cleaning the throttle body, this can mean that there’s an internal issue with it and it needs to be replaced. [7] X Research source

Be sure to choose an air filter that fits your car. You can find your air filter specifications in your car’s manual, or look up your car’s information on any auto parts’ website. [9] X Research source Experts recommend replacing your air filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles (32,000-48,000 km).

Some distributor caps can be removed by hand, while others might be secured with screws and require a screwdriver to get off.

If you notice any loose cables attached to your battery, tighten them. Experts advise changing your battery about every 3 years. If you do have corrosion on your battery and it’s more than 3 years old, changing it will likely override reduced engine power.

In reduced power mode, your car’s engine might be noticeably louder and sound like it is running slowly. You might also notice that it’s harder for you to turn the steering wheel. [15] X Research source You can safely drive with reduced power, but you want to resolve the issue quickly by driving your car back home or to a mechanic. Driving for an extended period can cause damage to your engine. [16] X Research source It is common for your check engine light to come on when you are in reduced engine power.

It’s important to regularly check your engine oil and top it up if it’s low, as well as change it completely every 7,500 miles (12,000 km).

If not fixed quickly, this can cause your engine to overheat.
